Every brand needs a shorthand — one image that carries the whole idea before a single word is read. For us, that image was never going to be a logo mark or a skyline. It was a chessboard, and the pieces standing on it.
We didn’t start with the board. We started with a simple, stubborn belief: a home isn’t neutral. It has a temperament. Walk into one apartment and it wants you to slow down and stay quiet. Walk into another and it wants you loud, up late, lights low. Most listings flatten that difference into square footage and a price per night. We wanted a language that kept the difference — and chess, it turns out, already had one.
Eight pieces, eight personalities.
A king doesn’t rush. A knight moves in a way nothing else on the board can. A pawn looks modest until you remember it’s the piece that reaches the other side and becomes anything it wants. None of that is decoration — it’s character, built into the rules of the game centuries before we ever put a roof over it. When we name a home The Black Knight or The Snow Queen, we’re not picking a pretty word. We’re telling you, before you’ve seen a single photo, what kind of stay you’re walking into.
“You don’t just book a room. You pick your piece.”
That’s the line we keep coming back to, because it flips the usual script. Booking a stay is normally a process of elimination — filters, star ratings, a map full of pins that all start to blur together. We wanted it to feel like a choice instead: which mood are you in, which piece matches it, which home is going to meet you there. The board gives every listing a reason to exist beyond “another apartment for rent.”
A game built on trust.
There’s a second reason the metaphor stuck, and it has less to do with style and more to do with substance. Chess is a game of complete information — nothing hidden, no dice, no bluff. Every move is visible to both players, and the outcome comes down to the quality of the position, not the luck of the roll. That’s exactly the kind of stay we want to offer: no surprise fees at the door, no bait-and-switch photos, no fine print working against you. What you see on the board is the game you’re actually playing.
So the checkered floor in our photos, the piece on every listing, the language of “making your move” — none of it is styling for its own sake. It’s a promise, stated as simply as we could find the words for: come as you are, pick the piece that feels like you, and we’ll take care of the rest of the board.
